McKenzie Friend Support
Practical support when you are representing yourself in family court in England and Wales.
Worried about expensive solicitor fees? You do not always need a solicitor for every stage of a family court case. McKenzie Friends can provide practical support at a potentially lower cost, while solicitors and barristers remain important where specialist legal help is needed.
Family court proceedings can feel overwhelming, particularly when you are dealing with disputed allegations or trying to make arrangements for your children. A McKenzie Friend can help you organise your case, prepare for hearings and follow what is happening in court.
Why consider a McKenzie Friend?
For people representing themselves, McKenzie Friend assistance can be a cost-effective way to prepare for court, organise documents and receive permitted support during hearings. It is not a substitute for all solicitor or barrister services, but it can help you manage spending by choosing the support you need.
What support can include
Preparing your case
Help organising paperwork, understanding court directions, and preparing draft position statements or other documents for you to review and submit yourself.
Getting ready for hearings
Practical preparation, discussion of the issues you want to raise and help keeping track of important dates and documents.
Support at court
Where agreed and permitted, a McKenzie Friend can accompany you, take notes, quietly offer advice and help you organise papers during a hearing.
Remote assistance
Depending on your case, support may be provided remotely, in person or through a combination of both.
What a McKenzie Friend cannot normally do
A McKenzie Friend is not acting as your solicitor. They cannot conduct litigation, sign or file court documents on your behalf as a legal representative, or speak for you in court as of right. Speaking on your behalf requires the court's permission; conducting litigation requires the appropriate legal authorisation or exemption. You remain responsible for your case and court deadlines.
Every family court case is different. During your free initial call, we discuss your circumstances and explore suitable McKenzie Friend support based on the work required, hearing dates, location and availability. We explain the available options and fees before you decide whether to proceed. There is no obligation.
Who is this service for?
People involved in family court proceedings in England and Wales who can privately fund support. We do not provide legal aid or free representation. If you need legal advice or regulated representation, you should consult an appropriately qualified legal professional.
